Cluster Headache - Diagnosis & Treatment

How is a cluster headache diagnosed? 

Diagnosing a cluster headache typically involves a thorough medical history review and physical examination. A headache diary recording the frequency, duration, location, and severity of headaches can be very helpful for diagnosis. 

Additional tests such as imaging studies or blood tests may be ordered to rule out other possible causes of headaches, particularly if there are concerning symptoms or a history of head injury.

How is a cluster headache treated? 

Treatment for cluster headaches may include: 

• Acute pain relief with medications such as sumatriptan or oxygen therapy 
• Preventive treatments such as verapamil, corticosteroids, or lithium to reduce the frequency and severity of cluster headaches 
• Lifestyle modifications and avoidance of triggers 
• Nerve blocks or surgical procedures for individuals with chronic cluster headaches who do not respond to other treatments 

Preventive treatments, usually administered at the start of the cluster period can also be used, with the goal of stopping these attacks. Examples include: 

• Calcium Channel Blockers 
• Corticosteriods 
• Anti-cGRP antibodies.
