Hormonal Headache - Diagnosis & Treatment

How is a hormonal headache diagnosed?

Diagnosing hormonal headaches typically involves a thorough medical history review, including details about menstrual cycles and hormone-related symptoms.

Be prepared to describe the frequency, location, severity, and duration of your headaches. Mention any accompanying symptoms like nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, or vision problems. Keeping a record of your headaches, including their timing in relation to your menstrual cycle, potential triggers (food, stress), and any medications you take, can be very helpful for diagnosis.

A physical examination may also be performed to rule out other possible causes of headaches. In some cases, if there's concern about a different underlying cause for your headaches, your doctor might recommend imaging tests like CT scans or MRIs to evaluate the brain.

How is a hormonal headache treated?

Treatment for hormonal headaches may include:

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can provide relief for mild to moderate headaches
  • Prescription medications such as triptans or hormone therapy for more severe or chronic cases
  • Lifestyle modifications, including stress management techniques, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy sleep schedule and dietary changes
  • Avoiding known triggers
  • Short course of preventive treatment during the menstruation period to prevent severe hormonal headaches
